How to Stay Healthy While Traveling for Work

September 05, 2019

Maintaining healthy habits is hard enough while at home, but it becomes even more of a challenge when business travel is added to the mix. Stay active, eat healthy and feel good throughout your entire trip with these simple tips:

Plan Ahead

Before heading out, take a few minutes to lay out a game plan for your trip with healthy habits in mind. Research your hotel to see if you will have access to a gym. If not, find a nearby park or boutique fitness studio you can visit. Pack fitness essentials, including running shoes and gym clothes, and consider a resistance band or jump rope for hotel room workouts. Finally, think through your day-to-day routine and visualize when you’ll be able to fit in exercise, meals and relaxation.

Maximize Travel Time

Airports are an unavoidable certainty of business travel. Save your work for when you are restricted to your seat in-flight, and take the opportunity in the airport to stretch your legs. Better yet, kill time by walking around the terminal. Want an extra exercise boost? Carry your bag instead of rolling it to give yourself a bonus workout and help elevate your heart rate so your body thinks it’s getting more of a workout.

Schedule Exercise

Stick to your regular exercise routine as much as possible. If there’s a hotel gym, take advantage – even a quick 30-minute workout can boost your energy, regulate your metabolism and calm pre-meeting nerves. Even if you don’t have gym access or time to go on a run, do a fast bodyweight workout of squats, lunges, push-ups, planks and burpees.

Make Healthy Choices

Stay on track with your normal diet and nutrition as much as possible. If you’re limited to working lunches or fast food, look for protein-packed options and minimize the carbohydrates to keep your energy levels up. You also can plan ahead by packing some to-go snacks from home, like nuts and granola bars.

Business travel may be a part of your job, but there’s no reason why it has to disrupt your healthy lifestyle. Use these tips to navigate your next trip and you will return home feeling better than ever.
