Boise Paper is committed to responsible fiber procurement
Boise Paper sources wood fiber from sustainably managed working forests, and we rely on internationally recognized, credible and science-based forest monitoring organizations – like the US Forest Service’s Forest Inventory and Analysis program and Conservation International’s NatureServe – to make determinations regarding the status of forest areas. Boise Paper does not accept any wood fiber that is not strictly traceable to acceptable forest areas.

Our Commitment in Action
- Boise Paper employs professional foresters that ensure wood fiber is responsibly harvested from sustainably managed timberlands.
- Boise Paper proudly supports research conducted by the National Council for Air and Stream Improvement to advance our knowledge of forests and the ecosystem services they provide, including biodiversity protection and carbon sequestration.
- Boise Paper forestry staff collect and maintain detailed information on all potential sourcing areas prior to any fiber deliveries. Further, our sourcing controls are certified to the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) Controlled Wood Standard and Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) Fiber Sourcing Standard.
- Boise Paper is committed to ensuring our sourcing practices are not only environmentally sustainable, but socially and economically as well. Wood fiber suppliers are contractually bound to provide legally harvested wood and conform to all laws and regulations relevant to their operations. Boise Paper forestry staff conduct routine audits of its wood fiber suppliers to ensure strict compliance with US and international law.
Certifications
We believe there are three credible and independently valid certification programs available today.
In fact, according to the U.S. National Society of State Foresters, “No certification program can credibly claim to be ‘best’, and no certification program that promotes itself as the only certification option can maintain credibility.” We also believe that free and fair competition among programs fosters continuous improvement, and we work with our customers to ensure our certification choices meet their needs.

Forest Management Certification
Forest management certification indicates that forests are managed according to science-based guidelines that ensure that long-term health and sustainability of the working timberlands. Boise Paper sources much of its wood fiber from these certified forests and makes product claims according to the content of our paper.
Fiber Sourcing Certification
We also source fiber from lands that are not independently certified but otherwise meet our rigorous sustainability requirements. Boise Paper is independently certified to strict sourcing standards that require protection of biodiversity, logging professional education, and adherence to best management practices in timber harvesting to ensure that even fiber that isn’t certified is sustainably and legally produced.
Chain-of-Custody Certification
Boise Paper makes claims about the certified fiber and recycled content of our paper. To do so requires robust due diligence systems which establish that certified wood fiber is strictly traceable and never mixed with controversial sources. From sourcing, to manufacturing, to shipping, Boise Paper operations are independently certified to the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®), Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI), and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) Chain of Custody standards.
PCA’s Boise Paper mill is certified to all three procurement standards available in the U.S.
Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI)
The Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) is a North American standard, developed by professional foresters, conservationists, scientists, and others, to promote sustainable forest management and address key environmental, social, and economic forest values.
Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®)

Deforestation and biodiversity requirements are evolving, and Boise Paper is here to meet your needs.
Thanks to decades of commitment to sustainability in the forest products manufacturing sector, each year U.S. forests grow approximately two times more tree volume than is harvested, and overall forest cover loss has stopped or reversed across most of North America. However, in response to international laws regarding deforestation and evolving sustainable forestry certification requirements, Boise Paper has introduced a wood fiber traceability program called PackTrace™ which relies on precise geospatial tracking to ensure that Boise Paper comes from areas that are not deforested. PackTrace can help support our customers’ deforestation-free product claims where required.
